Château Palmer was established in 1814. Before that time it was called Château de Gasq. This Margaux, Bordeaux property is a 3rd growth from the Médoc 1855 classification. They have a total of 66 hectares mostly located in the Cantenac area on a variety of soils. A majority of the wine world would agree that Château Palmer drinks above its 3rd growth classification. The 1998 Château Palmer is a blend of 52% Merlot, 43% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot. It is showing very well and still with plenty of life left in bottle. The primary fruit notes of dark cherries/blackberries are still around. After decanting, it is showing tobacco, espresso, dark chocolate and mushroom notes. According to the Château, the 1998 vintage was: “Classic. Both literally and figuratively, little or nothing could cloud this vintage. Because apart from a little rain in September, the grapes were treated to warm and dry weather, ideal for attaining optimal ripeness.” Fun fact: There was no 1963 Château Palmer. The vintage was so bad they declassified the grapes and put them into the bottling for Château Desmirail. There was also no 1968.
